Last year, CSC distributed $5100 in grocery gift cards to cancer patients during their active treatment cycle, and held 9 live cooking demonstrations in partnership with local chefs. Between these two programs, 51 households received $100 for groceries, and 134 people learned how to prepare and cook nutritious meals using local ingredients at home. Cancer rates and expenses are increasing, and with inflation on the rise now more than ever, these programs are needed in our community.

Bloomington Developmental Learning Center
EDUCATION
At BDLC, we pride ourselves on offering a nutritious, plant based menu that supports healthy lifestyles and sustainable learning. Proceeds from Bloomingfoods Positive Change would be used to expand our gardening projects for our students. Our Pre-K classrooms actively engage in cultivating fruits and vegetables, fostering a hands-on learning experience in agriculture and nutrition. With additional funding, we aim to construct a new gardening shed to further facilitate these initiatives. Moreover, investing in a compost system will not only enrich our garden's soil but also provide invaluable lessons on organic gardening and the farm-to-table food production process, completing the circle of experiential learning at BDLC.
Farm to Family Fund, Inc.
AGRICULTURE, ENVIRONMENT, FOOD ACCESS, PUBLIC HEALTH, SUSTAINABILITY
The Farm to Family Fund purchases unsold fresh, local and sustainably grown food at half price from farmers at the close of both Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market and Bloomington Winter Farmers’ Market. This food is donated to Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, Pantry 279, Community Kitchen of Monroe County, Hoosier Hills Food Bank, and The Rise at Middle Way House. For eleven years our all-volunteer organization has made a significant financial impact on the bottom line of local farmers while making local, fresh, healthy food available to hundreds of food insecure people in Bloomington and the surrounding area. In our fiscal year ending April 30, we donated over $356,000 worth of farm produce and directly paid farmers $178,000! Positive Change funds will help us to increase our impact on Bloomington’s local food economy.
Environmental Resilience Institute
EDUCATION, ENVIRONMENT, SUSTAINABILITY
Indiana must take action on climate change, and due to a lack of sufficient action or environmentally forward policy at the state level, communities are taking it into their own hands before it's too late. To that end, the IU Environmental Resilience Institute helps communities advance projects that will make Hoosiers more resilient to climate change. Our work with students, communities, and organizations is filling a critical need for expert-level support of climate action in Indiana while training the next generation of sustainability leaders to tackle one of the biggest issues facing humanity. Each summer, ERI's McKinney Climate Fellows are trained in sustainability careers and work full time with Bloomington nonprofits on projects that are advancing our city's ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and withstand the changes that are already coming. This diverse group of fellows is paid equitably, and they live in the community to be able to understand Bloomington's needs and make the biggest impact. Positive Change support would pay for these student scholarships; 100% of the proceeds will go to students working in Bloomington.

We offer weekly opportunities for community members of all experience-levels to help us cultivate the flagship Orchard site, while developing their own hands-on orcharding skills to share with others. We also host "free to the community" classes and workshops (while compensating local educators to team them), to remove any financial barriers from residents taking a more proactive approach to participating in the local food system. If selected as a Positive Change recipient, as an all-volunteer nonprofit, we would invest the community's donations in more free classes and resources to help grow the community's knowledge and harvests, together.
The League of Women Voters of Bloomington and Monroe County

The funds will be used to support our outreach through printed materials, social media, podcasts, and other voter education materials.
Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools
EDUCATION, FOOD ACCESS
We plan to split the funds between two essential needs for our students - the food assistance program and mental health supports. Food assistance helps pay for lunches for students who do not have funds in their lunch account. The Mental Health assistance helps provide training and materials for faculty to help identify when a child is experiencing anxiety and behavioral issues. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among adolescents in Indiana, according to the Indiana Center for Prevention of Youth Abuse and Suicide. That same group reports that 22% of high school-age girls and 12% of high school-age boys seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year.
The alarming rise in mental health crises is further complicated by a lack of access to quality care. A systemic goal is to help fund in-school therapy services for some students.

EDUCATION, FOOD ACCESS
Compass Early Learning Center offers early education and care to children ages 1-5, prioritizing the needs of children from low-income working families in Monroe County. The money we receive is used to help our clients meet their financial obligations of rent, utilities, internet access, medical needs and transportation, including the purchase of bicycles, both new and used.
WildCare Inc.
EDUCATION, ENVIRONMENT, SUSTAINABILITY
Each year, more than 1,000 injured and infant wildlife come through WildCare Inc.’s doors and benefit from the on- and off-site rehabilitation care provided by our licensed animal care team. Additionally, WildCare provides educational opportunities in the South Central Indiana region, including events at WonderLab, Meadowood Retirement Community, WildCamp, and the Indiana Master Naturalist Program, alongside year-round, hands-on animal-care learning and teaching opportunities for area high-school and university students through internships and volunteer positions. We receive no federal or state funding and rely almost entirely on the generosity of our community to make possible our critical work of rehabilitating and caring for Indiana native wildlife. Positive Change funds will be utilized to continue providing high-quality and consistent care for the animals in our rehabilitative care, which are brought to us by concerned citizens in Bloomington, Monroe County, and surrounding areas. The average cost of weekly care for each animal in rehabilitation is $65. In 2023, we handled 1,313 intakes during the calendar year. The Water Fund focuses on projects that use sustainable, nature-based solutions to improve water quality. Our key objectives include reducing erosion, sediment, and nutrient pollution from faulty septic systems and manure/fertilizer runoff. In 2023, we planted 900 native shrubs and trees, installed 600 willow tree starts, supported septic system maintenance for 41 households, and provided over 500 free soil tests. Through the Positive Change program, your support will help us continue these kinds of impactful conservation projects for a Clean Water Future.

Funds from the Positive Change Program would go towards honoraria for local writers and musicians who are featured at our three free reading series each month (one for poetry, one for prose, one for spoken word). In addition, this award would allow for more collaboration and partnerships within the community and would help support our venues, including The Juniper Art Gallery, Monroe County History Center, and the Backspace Gallery.

Mobility Aids Lending Library (MALL) provides free medical and mobility devices, including canes, walkers, scooters, and wheelchairs, to people who need them. MALL’s mission of repurposing donated mobility aids offers an environmentally friendly alternative to discarding functional medical equipment. The funds raised through Bloomingfoods' Positive Change program would be used for refurbishing mobility aids and covering our operational needs such as rental fees for office space. As experienced mobility aid users who live with disabilities ourselves, we provide compassionate peer support to match equipment with people who might otherwise be unable to obtain it due to time or financial constraints, insurance limitations, or other factors. We are a volunteer run community organization founded in 2022, and have since actively provided services to a wide and ever-growing population of Monroe County residents as word about our organizations circulates.
Exodus Refugee Immigration, Inc.
RENT AND BASIC NEEDS ASSISTANCE
Exodus Refugee Immigration is dedicated to the protection of human rights by serving the resettlement needs of refugees and other displaced people fleeing persecution, injustice, and war by welcoming them to Indiana. Funding will assist the Exodus’s Emergency Assistance Program to provide housing assistance and associated basic needs, such as food, clothing, medicine, etc. for newly arriving refugees. This funding is particularly critical, given rapidly rising rental costs, a lack of rental availability in the Bloomington area, and the arrival of clients with little to no notice to the agency. In 2023, Exodus’s Bloomington clients paid an average of $979 for a one-bedroom unit, $1,125 for a two-bedroom unit, and $1,500 to $1,800+ for three- and four-bedroom units. Bloomington’s fair market rate area is more expensive than 83% of the state (https://www.rentdata.org/bloomington-in-hud-metro-fmr-area/2023).
Grant funding will allow recipients of emergency assistance to achieve a measure of security and focus on larger self-sufficiency goals, such as obtaining employment, learning English, addressing medical concerns, or enrolling in higher education.

WonderLab Museum of Science, Health and Technology
EDUCATION
WonderLab would like to use Positive Change funds for our First Time Parent (FTP) Membership initiative. Providing year-round educational experiences for children - birth through 3 years old - is of critical importance to the community. Research in early childhood education suggests children’s experiences starting from birth can have a significant impact on their later learning, building important skillsets, and creating positive attitudes about learning. WonderLab addresses the need for quality early learning opportunities through a First Time Parent Membership - a free membership for first-time parents until their child reaches 18 months of age.
WonderLab is the only location in our region that provides STEM-focused experiences, informed by research, for young children and their caregivers; is financially accessible; and is open to the public six days a week, year-round. With external funding support, the First Time Parent membership program can move from being solely supported by WonderLab reserves to a more financially sustainable position. Bloomingfoods Positive Change could completely fund almost three months of new First Time Parent members at WonderLab.

CanopyBloomington
EDUCATION, PUBLIC HEALTH, ARTS & CULTURE
Trees cool the city, mitigate flooding, block noise, slow traffic, increase business in our local stores, provide spaces for recreation and social connection, and even create jobs. Yet our city’s trees are vanishing at an alarming rate. In response, CanopyBloomington does mass tree plantings—completely free of charge—for our most vulnerable neighbors who bear the greatest burdens of climate change. Canopy also teaches the general public how to plant and care for their own trees as a way to prepare for our shared future. Funds raised by Positive Change will support CanopyBloomington’s mission—cultivating a community-powered, equitable, and thriving urban forest.
SCCAP Thriving Connections
EDUCATION, FOOD ACCESS, PUBLIC HEALTH
Thriving Connections provides support by making the personal and community connections that are important for successful life change. Our close community of low-income families, service learners, volunteers, and community members grow and learn from one another through shared meals, personal development workshops, and community service. We would love to have Bloomingfoods support to fund our mini-grants program, in which we allow our participants to apply for emergency funding. This funding may be to solve a transportation issue that prevents someone from getting to work and it may be a health need that is causing a family to make tough financial decisions. We work with our families to solve the problems we can with existing resources, but sometimes emergency funds are needed.
