Gerry Hays

Why are you interested in serving on the board of Bloomington Cooperative Services (BCS)?
I believe in the mission of Bloomingfoods and have a tremendous amount of respect for the current board members and operations team. Beyond serving the Coop, I believe it’s an opportunity to serve the greater Bloomington community.

What experience or involvement have you had with Bloomingfoods or other cooperatives?
I previously served on the Board (2018-19) and am currently advising the Board on financial matters.

What has been your experience working cooperatively with small groups of people?
I have considerable experience working cooperatively in small groups and on boards (both private sector and public sector). I am currently a board member of White Pine Wilderness Academy, another volunteer position.

Please share any professional, volunteer, or life experience you have had that will provide insight when serving on the BCS Board of Directors. Include knowledge, skills, formal training, and education that will contribute to the mission of our co-op.
I have considerable experience in starting and building companies. I am a 5x entrepreneur, current business owner, and active investor in other entrepreneurs. I teach in the Finance Department at the IU Kelley School of Business. Early in my career, I spent 6 years in government affairs during the Bayh/O’bannon administrations. I earned a BA and JD from Indiana University

How do your values and lifestyle align with the values and mission of the co-op?
Angela and I met while attending Indiana University and recently moved back because we love Bloomington. More importantly, we wanted to raise our children in a community where people are conscious of our physical environment and understand the importance of diversity and free expression.

Given the stated Ends of BCS, what do you see as the primary role of BCS in the community?
I see BCS instrumental in promoting community, local ownership, local hiring, and local farmers.

What are opportunities and challenges you see for BCS in the future expression of these Ends?
Making sure BCS is positioned to thrive so that it can execute on its ends and serve its varying constituencies.

Please share any other brief statement that you feel is important regarding your potential service as a member of our board.
I care about BCS and the people behind it. That’s why I’m running again
