Stacey Giroux

Why are you interested in serving on the board of Bloomington Cooperative Services (BCS)?

think cooperatives and self-governance are important to build community and can be very effective. Bloomingfoods is such an asset to the community, and if I can help make it stronger I will.

What experience or involvement have you had with Bloomingfoods or other cooperatives?

My experience has been as a member of cooperatives such as Bloomingfoods and the IU Credit Union. I have been a  member of Bloomingfoods since I moved here in2011.

What has been your experience working cooperatively with small groups of people?

In my job (research), every project is collaborative and I work with others at all stages of them. I have worked with groups as small as two additional people and as large as two dozen team members. Sometimes I have been the leader, other times I have had smaller roles.

Please share any professional, volunteer, or life experience you have had that will provide insight when serving on the BCS Board of Directors. Include knowledge, skills, formal training, and education that will contribute to the mission of our co-op.

My area of research is in food systems and I have served in faculty governance positions at IU. Working in different countries and volunteering with a range of organizations (from our Community Kitchen to therapeutic horsemanship) has allowed me to work with people with a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

How do your values and lifestyle align with the values and mission of the co-op?

Our family grows vegetables for the household organically, using permaculture principles. We strive to purchase the rest of our vegetables and animal protein from local producers and Bloomingfoods. I think our food system must be improved to be more sustainable, more equitable, and one that promotes healthy, affordable food.

Given the stated Ends of BCS, what do you see as the primary role of BCS in the community?

I think the primary role is to help people be their healthiest selves, however they define that. And this means working with other organizations, one organization can’t do it alone. I also think it is to support the local food system and serve as a model of collective action.

What are opportunities and challenges you see for BCS in the future expression of these Ends?

COVID-19 has highlighted key weaknesses in our food system, and this time is an opportunity for Bloomingfoods to  emerge as leader for a new way forward. However, Bloomingfoods must do better to make everyone feel welcome and make sure all community members can take advantage of what it offers.
