Why are you interested in serving on the board of Bloomington Cooperative Services (BCS)?

I have been shopping at Bloomingfoods since I was a little girl, and I have always connected with its mission. I think that I would be a valuable addition to the board with my unique perspective as a staff member and my education in sustainable business.

What experience or involvement have you had with Bloomingfoods or other cooperatives?

have been a member of the co-op since early 2020. began working as a part-time cashier at the West location in September 2020,and I moved to full-time last month.

What has been your experience working cooperatively with small groups of people?

I have experience working cooperatively with groups concerning sustainability topics in business; I was involved with the Kelley Institute for Social Impact throughout college and served on two executive boards. These experiences made me familiar with various aspects of both sustainability and social enterprises, including cooperatives.

Please share any professional, volunteer, or life experience you have had that will provide insight when serving on the BCS Board of Directors. Include knowledge, skills, formal training, and education that will contribute to the mission of our co-op.

I served on the board of directors for the Fair Trade organization Global Gifts from 2019-2020 and worked on two of its strategic planning committees. I have also shadowed on the board for the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis on behalf of the Youth Empowerment department during my AmeriCorps term.

How do your values and lifestyle align with the values and mission of the co-op?

As a vegan and environmentalist, Bloomingfoods has always been an important resource for me in finding foods that support my values. Its mission to support local vendors also resonates with my dedication and experience working with laborequity topics and the Fair Trade movement.

Given the stated Ends of BCS, what do you see as the primary role of BCS in the community?

I believe that the primary role of BCS is to ensure that the cooperative is a safe space for all members, non-member customers, and staff. BCS is responsible for taking proactive movement to improve the co-op and maintain accountability.

What are opportunities and challenges you see for BCS in the future expression of these Ends?

I think that one of the most serious challenges BCS faces in achieving its Ends Statement is providing adequate choices for lower income members and customers. In order to truly strengthen the community, the co-op needs to remain accessible to all levels of it.

Please share any other brief statement that you feel is important regarding your potential service as a member of our board.

As someone who has worked in the food service industry in Bloomington for the past seven years, I have seen how food can unite and support a community. If elected to the board, I would work to ensure that Bloomingfoods continues to be  a strong support to Bloomington.
