Gerry Hayes

Why are you interested in serving on the board of Bloomington Cooperative Services (BCS)?

I’m interested in serving on the board of BCS to ensure Bloomington and surrounding communities have a vibrant locally sourced food system consistent with values such as sustainability and community. Everybody must eat, but where they spend their dollars is a habit. We need to change habits.

What experience or involvement have you had with Bloomingfoods or other cooperatives?

My wife and I were members in 1993 while in Bloomington and renewed our membership when we moved back to Bloomington in 2017. I previously served on the BCS Board (2018-19).

What has been your experience working cooperatively with small groups of people?

currently serve on the Board of White Pine Wilderness Academy and have served on several corporate boards in multiple industries including food, technology, marketing, and finance.

Please share any professional, volunteer, or life experience you have had that will provide insight when serving on the BCS Board of Directors. Include knowledge, skills, formal training, and education that will contribute to the mission of our co-op.

Asa serial entrepreneur, I’ve learned to view the world through the eyes of creative problem solving. Additionally, for17years, I taught Venture Capital &Entrepreneurial Finance at the IU Kelley School of Business, earning5 teaching awards in the process. I believe my experiences and insights are well suited to work in collaboration with the Board in support of the BCS Management Team.

How do your values and lifestyle align with the values and mission of the co-op?

My values are in perfect harmony with those of the Coop.

Given the stated Ends of BCS, what do you see as the primary role of BCS in the community?

It is my personal belief that BCS has an opportunity not only to be a provider of food but a platform to educate the community, expressing the values of local, inclusion, community, and abundance.

What are opportunities and challenges you see for BCS in the future expression of these Ends?

At the highest level, outside meeting the intent of the Coop, our challenges and opportunities are one in the same: 1) out flanking the national competition; 2) broadening the tent of community support; and 3) addressing the financial obligations of the past while laying a foundation for the future.

Please share any other brief statement that you feel is important regarding your potential service as a member of our board.

I’ll do my best. Grateful for your consideration.
